Propose something new

Overview

Follow these steps if you want to propose:

  • a new component or pattern

  • a new variant of an existing component or pattern

  • new features within the ONS prototype kit

  • new documentation or guidance

How to propose something new

Check the backlog

Check if someone has already suggested your idea on:

If your idea has already been raised, you can comment on the issue and provide additional evidence that the change is needed.

Raise an issue

If your idea has not already been raised, raise an issue using our template (opens in a new tab)

At this stage you just need to present your idea and evidence of user needs. Your evidence could be from:

  • user research

  • usability and accessibility testing

  • research into best practice

You should provide prototypes and mocked-up examples to support your proposal.

To let us know that you have raised an issue, contact us.

Next steps

The Design System team will review your proposal and see if it meets the contribution criteria.

Once the proposal is ready to be worked on, it will be marked as “To do” in the community backlog on GitHub (opens in a new tab) .

The team will then work with you to decide who should develop the new feature.
